Where it comes from

The story of Nathaneal

The Nathan of the Hebrew Bible does one of the boldest things anybody does in it. A king has taken another man's wife and arranged the husband's death, and the prophet comes to court and tells him a story — about a rich man with many flocks who takes the single ewe lamb that a poor man had raised in his house and loved like a daughter. The king is furious and says the man deserves to die. Nathan tells him he is the man. The whole scene runs on a trick of narrative rather than on prophecy, and it is one of the earliest examples in literature of a story being used to get around somebody's defenses. He kept his position afterward, which is the surprising part.

Meaning

God has given

The Hebrew joins the verb about giving to the name of God. The shorter name, Nathan, is the verb alone: he gave. They are built from the same material and they are not the same name, and neither is an abbreviation of the other.

Fashion outlook

Nathaneal sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled, warm and easy to explain to a child.
  • Nate is one of the most usable short forms in English at any age.
  • The name has forms across Europe and Latin America.
What to consider
  • Nathaniel and Nathanael are both standard and his transposed vowels will be corrected constantly.
  • It will be shortened to Nathan by people who assume the names are the same.
  • It is long in a country that shortens everything.
