Naquan
Masculine
Naquan contains a letter that English does not really need. Every q in the language is followed by a u, and the pair together writes a sound that k and w could write between them. The letter is there because Norman scribes put it there, replacing a perfectly good Old English spelling with a Latin one.

Where it comes from
From A sound English once wrote with cw to Naquan
Our story of Naquan
Before the Conquest, English wrote the sound with cw: cwen for queen, cwic for quick, cwellan for kill. The scribes who arrived after 1066 were trained in Latin and French, where the same sound was written qu, and within a couple of generations they had respelled the whole language. Nothing about the pronunciation changed; only the letters did. That is why English now has a letter that never appears alone, always drags a u behind it, and does a job two other letters were already doing perfectly well. Names built in America a thousand years later inherit the whole arrangement without anybody choosing it.

Not established
Neither element carries meaning. The front is one of the smaller American prefixes and the back is a syllable that appears across a family of names of the same period. Both are sounds rather than words, so there is nothing to translate, and the readings printed in name books are supplied rather than found.
How the name formed
- A sound English once wrote with cw
- Norman scribes replacing it with qu
- A back element appearing across one family of names
- Naquan in the registers from the nineteen seventies
Pronouncing Naquan
nuh-KWAHN
Two syllables with the stress at the back and the first reduced almost to nothing. The qu writes the k-plus-w sound it always writes in English, so the spelling gives no trouble at all.

Fashion outlook
Naquan sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

- The stress at the back gives the name a firm shape.
- There is no meaning to give, on either half of the name.
- Naquon and Nyquan are also in use and will be confused with it.
- It is closely tied to the later twentieth century.
