The story of Nandi
Nandi kaBhebhe was a woman of the Langeni people who bore Shaka to a Zulu chief who would not acknowledge the marriage; mother and son were driven out and lived among several clans before Shaka rose to power in the 1810s. Her position afterwards was formidable, and Shaka's response to her death in 1827 is one of the most-cited episodes in Zulu history. The name is used across southern Africa and, since the 1970s, in African American families; its best year in United States records is 1991. The Sanskrit Nandi, Shiva's bull, is a separate and equally genuine name, and Indian families use it for men.
Meaning
sweet, of sweet disposition
Zulu Nandi, from a root meaning sweet or pleasant. The name is well attested in Zulu naming. Separately, Sanskrit Nandi is the bull who serves as Shiva's mount and gatekeeper, from a root meaning joy; and the Nandi are a Kalenjin people of Kenya. The three are unrelated and share only the spelling.
Pronouncing Nandi
NAHN-dee
Two syllables with the stress on the first. Zulu is tonal and the tones are not written in this spelling, which loses information a Zulu speaker would supply.

The Sherene test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Nandi's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Sherene climbed just as high around 1972, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Sherene's path sketches the road Nandi is walking now.
Nandi sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
