The story of Mosiah
The Book of Mormon, published in 1830, contains a book of Mosiah and two kings of the name, and its personal names divide roughly into biblical ones and ones with no biblical counterpart at all. Mosiah is in the second group. Latter-day Saint families have used it as a given name since, and its American record tracks that community closely — it is far more common in Utah and Idaho than anywhere else, in exactly the way Ammon, Nephi and Moroni are.
Meaningscholars disagree
savior, deliverer — on the Hebrew reading
The name is not in the Hebrew scriptures. Readers who look for a Hebrew source point to moshia, a participle from yasha, 'to save', meaning a savior or deliverer — the same verb behind Joshua, Isaiah and Hosea. That is a plausible construction and it is a reading offered rather than a derivation recorded, since the name enters the record in a nineteenth-century text rather than an ancient one.
Pronouncing Mosiah
moh-SY-uh
Three syllables with the stress in the middle, on the pattern of Josiah and Isaiah. moh-ZY-uh, with a voiced s, is also heard within the communities that use it.

The Jamee test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Mosiah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jamee climbed just as high around 1973, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jamee's path sketches the road Mosiah is walking now.
Mosiah sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Moe and Siah are both natural short forms and both have records of their own.
- Three syllables on a very familiar pattern, so English speakers say it correctly at first sight.
- A documented origin with a known date, which most names cannot supply.
- It is strongly identified with Latter-day Saint families, which is either the point or something to weigh.
- Its meaning is a reading offered rather than a derivation recorded.
- It sits close to Josiah and Isaiah and will be misheard as both.
