Where it comes from

The story of Mortimer

One of them took a king off the throne of England and paid for it four years later. He escaped from the Tower, went to France, came back with the queen and an army, forced the king's abdication in favor of a boy, and governed the country in that boy's name — until the boy turned eighteen, had him seized in the queen's own chamber at Nottingham, and hanged him at Tyburn without a trial. It is one of the clearest cases in English history of a family reaching the very top by an entirely illegitimate route and being removed by the same means.

Meaning

the dead water

Two Old French elements, both transparent. The place is real and still on the map, and the derivation is not disputed; whether the water in question was stagnant, still or simply lifeless is not recorded.

Mortimer sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1916, with 91 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Mortimer sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is unmistakable and nobody who hears it forgets it.
  • Morty works as a short form and is considerably warmer.
  • It carries a specific and dramatic history rather than a vague one.
What to consider
  • The meaning is bleak once explained and the front syllable is French for death.
  • The generation that used it is now gone entirely.
  • It reads as a comic name to many people, which is hard to shift.
