Where it comes from

The story of Mitsuo

Names ending in -o, for 'man,' were among the most ordinary Japanese boys' names of the early twentieth century, and Mitsuo came to the United States with Japanese American families of that time. The poet and calligrapher Aida Mitsuo, whose brush-written verses are widely loved in Japan, wrote the end of his given name in the old kana spelling, with the syllable wo, the way the 'man' element was written before Japan reformed its kana spelling in 1946. The gymnast Mitsuo Tsukahara, an Olympic champion for Japan, gave his surname to the Tsukahara vault: a turn onto the table and a backward somersault off it.

Meaningscholars disagree

light + man, among other writings

The characters, not the sound, fix the meaning. Mitsu is most often written with the character for 'light' or for 'full, abundant,' and o with one of several characters for 'man,' 'husband' or 'hero.' Only the written form a family chose can say which Mitsuo is meant.

Mitsuo sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1925, with 40 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Mitsuo sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A traditional Japanese name with a documented history among Japanese American families.
  • Its meaning is fixed by the characters chosen, so a family can settle the sense it wants.
  • Carried by a celebrated gymnast whose name lives on in the sport.
What to consider
  • English speakers tend to say MIT-soo-oh, splitting the ts; one correction usually settles it.
  • It is associated with an earlier generation of Japanese Americans, so it can read as a name of that era.
