Where it comes from

The story of Mirella

Frédéric Mistral wrote Mirèio in Provençal at a time when the language was being written down again after centuries of decline, and the poem made both the language and the name famous. French took it as Mireille and Italian as Mirella; Spanish has Mirella too. The name has been in steady Italian and Latin American use since, and it reaches American records from both directions.

Meaningscholars disagree

to admire, or wonderful

The poet who coined Mirèio connected it to a Provençal verb meaning to admire or to wonder at. A second account treats the name as a Provençal form of Miriam, which would give it an entirely different and much older origin. Neither has been settled.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented literary origin with a date and an author, which few names have.
  • Mira and Ella are both complete names in their own right.
  • Every letter is said, so Italian and Spanish speakers read it correctly at once.
What to consider
  • Mirella, Mariella and Marcella are close enough to be confused in speech.
  • The meaning is contested between the poet's own gloss and an older Hebrew line.
  • Americans will flatten the first vowel from mee to mih.
