Milford is a ford beside a mill, and there are a great many of them on the English map because a mill needed water and a crossing needed shallow water. The one place called Milford that is not that at all is the most famous: Milford Haven in Wales, whose name is Norse and has nothing to do with mills.

How old is the name Milford?

Where it comes from

The story of Milford

American naming took English place names for sons in quantity through the nineteenth century, and the -ford group was well represented: Milford, Clifford, Bradford, Sanford, Stanford. All of them describe a river crossing of some kind, which was the sort of feature a settlement was named for before roads and bridges made it unremarkable. Milford is also on the American map in a dozen states, which gave the name a local claim alongside the imported one. It goes to girls as well, as place-derived names generally do.

ford by the mill

Old English myln, a mill, and ford, a shallow crossing, give the ordinary English place name, and the combination is transparent. The Welsh harbor is a different word: Norse settlers called it something like melr fjordr, the sandbank inlet, and English speakers heard a familiar shape and wrote Milford. So two quite different names sit under one spelling, and which one a family had in mind depends entirely on whether they were thinking of a village or a port.

Milford sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1925, with 234 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Milford sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both elements are plain English, so the name explains itself once looked at.
  • Ford works as a short form and is a standing name of its own.
  • It has real places behind it on two continents rather than an invented history.
What to consider
  • The name is very strongly associated with the oldest generations and has not come back the way some Victorian names have.
  • Clifford, Milford and Wilford are close enough to be confused, and all carry the same period.
  • It goes to girls nearly as often as to boys in the record, so it settles nothing on a form.
