Where it comes from

The story of Mickeal

Mick became a slur because the name was so common. Irish emigration in the nineteenth century put very large numbers of men called Michael into English and American cities at once, and within a generation the short form had stopped referring to individuals and started referring to the group — which is exactly what happened to Paddy from Patrick, to Taffy from a Welsh form of David, and to Jock from John in Scotland. The mechanism is always the same and it says nothing about the name: a population arrives, one of its commonest names is noticed, and the name is turned into a label by people who are not interested in telling anybody apart.

Meaning

who is like God?

The Hebrew name is a question rather than a statement, and it was asked rhetorically. The spelling here is one of a great many American attempts at a name whose standard form contains a Greek letter written as ch, an unstressed second syllable and a final consonant cluster — three separate opportunities for a speller working by ear to go a different way. Mickeal takes the short form's spelling and grafts the ending back on.

How the name formed

  1. a Hebrew question used as an archangel's name
  2. Michael spreads across the whole of Christian Europe
  3. Irish emigration makes Mick a label rather than a name
  4. American spellings multiply through the twentieth century
  5. Mickeal appears among them in the 1910s

Fashion outlook

Mickeal sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The name behind it is one of the most established in the world.
  • Mike and Mickey are both available and belong to different decades.
  • The written form is genuinely rare while the spoken name is universal.
What to consider
  • Michael is overwhelmingly commoner and this spelling will be corrected everywhere.
  • The spelling invites an extra syllable that the name does not have.
  • The short form still carries an ethnic edge in some places.
