Mervyn
Masculine
Mervyn is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 1,581 boys against 5 girls since 1880.
Mervyn is the spelling that stays closest to the Welsh original, which is worth knowing because the other American forms of this name have drifted much further. The y in the middle is Welsh rather than decorative, and the v is doing the job that a Welsh f does. It also belongs to a writer who drew his own illustrations and spent decades out of print before anybody worked out what he had made.

Where it comes from
From Merfyn, an Old Welsh name of uncertain meaning to Mervyn
The story of Mervyn
Mervyn Peake was a painter and illustrator who wrote three novels about a vast decaying castle and the people trapped inside its rituals, illustrated them himself, and published them into a literary climate with no idea what to do with them. He was not a fantasy writer in any sense the genre recognized, and he was not a realist either. The books went quietly out of print, he developed a degenerative illness in his forties and died at fifty-seven, and it took another generation before the work was reassessed and stayed reassessed. He is now regularly named among the most original English novelists of the century and was, for most of his life, considered an illustrator who also wrote. The name he carried was ordinary in Wales and unusual everywhere else, which is roughly how his books were received.

Not established
The Old Welsh name is old enough that its elements are disputed. The second half is usually connected to a word meaning eminent or fair; the first half has no agreed reading at all, and proposals have come and gone for a century. Nothing about the name connects it to the English word it resembles. It is genuinely Welsh, genuinely early, and genuinely unexplained, which is a more useful thing to tell a child than a guess.
How the name formed
- Merfyn, an Old Welsh name of uncertain meaning
- A royal name in early medieval Gwynedd
- Mervyn as the closest English spelling

Pronouncing Mervyn
MER-vin
Two syllables, stress on the first. Welsh gives the second syllable a vowel English does not have, somewhere between the i of sit and an unstressed uh, and the y in the spelling is writing that rather than an English long i.

Fashion outlook
Mervyn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is the spelling nearest the Welsh original, which matters in a family with those roots.
- It is short, easily said and completely unambiguous in speech.
- It works on the register for either child, which the record confirms.
- It will be written as Marvin or Merwin by most people taking it down from speech.
- There is no meaning to give, and the obvious English word is not related.
- It is strongly of an earlier generation in American ears and has not returned.
