Where it comes from

The story of Merced

A Spanish expedition crossing the San Joaquin valley in the early nineteenth century had been traveling for days across dry country when it reached a substantial river coming down out of the mountains. They named it for the mercy of the Virgin, and the name stuck to the river, then to the county, then to the city. The river rises in the Sierra, runs through Yosemite Valley, and is the water that made the valley's meadows. The Spanish habit of naming places for whatever the party was feeling or for the saint's day they arrived on has left California with a map that reads, in places, like a diary.

Meaning

mercy

The Spanish word means mercy or favor, and it is used as a name through a title of the Virgin. The reading is settled; what is not recorded is whether a given family meant the title, the river or a shortening of a longer name.

Pronouncing Merced

mer-SED

Two syllables with the weight on the second. Americans in California say mer-SED as well, which is unusual for a Spanish place name there.

Merced sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1942, with 19 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Merced sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled and can be given in one word.
  • It works in English and Spanish-speaking households without adjustment.
  • It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it leaves a question open rather than closing it.
What to consider
  • Most children with this spelling are boys, but a real minority are girls; either may be taken for the other.
  • In California the name is a city and a county first, which is a strong association locally.
  • It is a strongly religious name in origin, which is a feature for many families and a consideration for others.
