The story of Maynor
Maginhard was a Frankish name that Normandy shortened to Mainard and English took as Maynard, where it became a surname. Its Central American career is separate and recent: Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua adopted a set of English-looking names through the twentieth century — Maynor, Melvin, Selvin, Edwin, Wilmer — and gave them freely, often respelled to Spanish reading habits. Maynor is one of the more common of them and reaches United States records almost entirely from those countries.
Meaningscholars disagree
strong and brave
Germanic Maginhard joins magin, 'strength, power', to hard, 'brave, hardy' — the reading is settled for Maynard, which came to England with the Normans and became a surname. Whether the Central American Maynor descends from it is not documented: the spelling appears in Guatemala and Honduras without a recorded derivation, and it may equally be an independent formation. The resemblance is close and the record is silent.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Erickson test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Maynor's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Erickson climbed just as high around 1987, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Erickson's path sketches the road Maynor is walking now.

The trade-off
- Two easy syllables that English and Spanish speakers both manage at first sight.
- Genuinely common in Central America rather than an invention.
- Six letters, nothing silent, and easy to write.
- The stress and the first vowel both differ between Spanish and English readings.
- Maynor, Maynard and Mainor all circulate and look quite different.
- Its descent from Maynard is likely rather than recorded, so a firm etymology overstates it.
