The story of Maximilliano
Frederick III named his son for two Romans he admired, and Maximilian I became Holy Roman Emperor in 1493. The name spread through central Europe and, by way of the Habsburgs, to Spain and Mexico — where a Habsburg Maximilian was installed as emperor in 1864 and executed three years later. Maximiliano is the Spanish form and Maximilliano an American respelling with a doubled l.
Meaning
greatest
From Latin maximus, greatest; Frederick III is said to have coined Maximilian for his son by combining Maximus with the Roman family name Aemilianus, so the name has a documented moment of invention.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
