Where it comes from

The story of Marven

A word that sounds like this one has a start date, which very few words do. Maven, meaning someone who knows a subject inside out, is Yiddish, from a Hebrew word for one who understands, and it was floating around New York speech without ever having reached print in any quantity. Then in the nineteen-sixties an advertising agency built a campaign for a pickle company around a character it called the Beloved Maven, a connoisseur who pronounced on pickles, and ran it for years. The word went from a neighborhood term to general American English on the back of it, and dictionaries began recording it shortly after. It now turns up in political journalism and technology writing with no trace of where it came from. The writer of the campaign claimed the credit explicitly, which is the part that makes the case unusual.

probably from a Welsh name whose elements are disputed

The commonest derivation takes it back to a Welsh men's name recorded from the ninth century, whose two elements have been read several ways and settled none. The connection to the English word marvel is a coincidence of modern spelling and is not an origin.

Marven sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1920, with 19 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Marven sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Marv detaches at once and needs no explanation anywhere.
  • Two syllables with front stress is the plainest shape English has.
  • The Welsh ancestor behind it is genuinely old and documented in real records.
What to consider
  • Marvin is far commoner and will be written for it by default.
  • The changed letter is inaudible, so the spelling must be given aloud every time.
  • The name's meaning is disputed, and the confident glosses offered for it are not evidence.
