Where it comes from

The story of Marshell

The word's institutional afterlife in England is odd enough to be worth a sentence. The marshal ran a court of his own — a court that traveled with the king and dealt with offenses committed near him — and that court had a prison, the Marshalsea, on the south bank of the Thames. It outlived the court by centuries and ended as a debtors' prison, one of the most notorious in London, where men were held until somebody paid what they owed and could not earn anything while inside. In America the most consequential bearer was John Marshall, who took a weak court and, in a single decision about a job appointment, established that it could strike down an act of Congress. Everything the Supreme Court does now rests on that.

Meaning

One who tends horses — a title that rose to command armies

The word came from Germanic elements meaning a horse and a servant, arrived in English through Norman French, and then climbed: stable hand, then the officer in charge of the horses, then the officer in charge of the household, then the highest military rank in several countries. The name preserves the bottom of that ladder and the top of it at once.

Marshell sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1938, with 23 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Marshell sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The name behind it is familiar, dignified and understood without explanation.
  • It has a plain short form that works at any age.
  • The history in it is genuinely interesting and easy to tell.
What to consider
  • Marshall is the standard spelling and his will be corrected to it constantly.
  • The ell ending makes the name look like a French borrowing that it is not.
  • It leans to boys, but a real share of children with this spelling are girls, so forms will sometimes guess wrong.
