The -land ending turned syllables into men's names for about a century in America. Leland, Garland, Roland, Cleveland, Marland: the front half might be a real element or might be nothing, and the ending did the work of making the whole thing sound like a name a man could carry.

Where it comes from

Our story of Marland

One bearer of the surname built and lost more than most people ever see. E. W. Marland found oil in Oklahoma, built one of the largest independent oil companies in the country, put up a mansion in Ponca City modeled on a Florentine palace with fifty-five rooms, and commissioned a competition for a bronze statue of a pioneer woman, which was cast at seventeen feet and unveiled to a crowd of forty thousand. Then eastern bankers took control of his company, he was forced out of the business he had made, and he ran for office instead, serving as a congressman and then as governor during the Dust Bowl. He died in a small house on the grounds of his own estate, having sold the palace. The name on the statue and the name on the company are the same one.

The ending is the English word for land and is genuine; the front half cannot be assigned. It could be from Mar as in a surname, from Mary, or from nothing. Names built on this pattern generally have one real half and one supplied half, and honesty consists in saying which is which rather than in inventing a source for both.

Pronouncing Marland

MAR-lund

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The second is reduced almost to nothing in ordinary speech, which is true of every English name ending this way and is why they are so often misspelled from dictation.

Fashion outlook

Marland sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, firm and easy to spell once heard, with no silent letters.
  • The ending is a real English word, so half the name explains itself.
  • It is genuinely uncommon without containing any unfamiliar sound.
What to consider
  • The front half has no meaning, so the name cannot be fully explained to a child who asks.
  • It will be heard as Marlon and Marland alike, and the two are close enough to be confused.
  • It is firmly dated to the early twentieth century in American records.
