Where it comes from

Our story of Markee

For a couple of centuries an English legal clerk who wrote marksman in a record meant the opposite of what the word means now. A person who could not write signed a document with a cross, and that cross was called his mark; the man who made it was the marksman, and the term appears in parish registers and court papers as a plain description of literacy, not of aim. The cross was often kissed after it was drawn, which made the signature binding in the signer's own eyes. The shooting sense grew up separately out of the other kind of mark — the target — and eventually drove the older one out of use entirely, so that the word now suggests precision where it used to record its absence. Both senses come from the same small word, which has meant a boundary, a sign, a target and a weight of silver at different times.

Two readings are possible and neither is documented. It may be the French title respelled, or the name Mark with a long ending attached. The English word for a large tent is a third resemblance and almost certainly a coincidence.

Fashion outlook

Markee sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Back stress makes a two-syllable name land firmly.
  • Mark is available as a short form and needs no explanation to anyone.
  • It is short, phonetic and easy to write.
What to consider
  • The record holds it for both sons and daughters, and daughters are much the larger group, so the name carries no signal either way.
  • Marquis, Markey and Marquee will all be written for it.
  • Stress placement is genuinely unsettled, so the name gets said two ways by strangers.
