Mariella
Feminine · “A diminutive of Maria”
Mariella is Maria with an Italian ending on it — the same -ella that gives Gabriella, Marcella and Antonella their run of soft syllables. Four beats, with the stress landing on the third, so it arrives with a small lift at the end. It has been in American records since before the First World War, quietly, and is climbing again now.

The story of Mariella
Hebrew Miryam passed into Greek as Mariam and Maria, and from there into Latin, which carried it to every corner of Europe that Rome touched. Italian took Maria and did what Italian does with beloved names: added -ella, the affectionate ending shared by Gabriella, Marcella and Donatella. Mariella has long been used in Italy both as a pet form and as a full given name in its own right, and Spanish has its own close cousin in Mariela. In the United States it has appeared on the record for over a century, thinly at first, and is on the rise now.

A diminutive of Maria, itself from Hebrew Miryam
The Maria part is not in doubt; the -ella is an Italian affectionate ending, so the whole reads roughly as 'little Maria.' What Miryam meant to begin with has never been settled. The three serious readings are 'bitter' (from Hebrew marah), 'beloved' (from Egyptian mry, since the name first appears in an Egyptian-influenced era), and 'drop of the sea,' which comes from a Latin reading of the Hebrew by early Christian scholars rather than from Hebrew itself.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Mariella went to 274 girls in 2025, but Mariela and Maryella are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 481, which makes it the 530th most-given girls’ name of the year — 413 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 3,342 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 5,866 for Mariella itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Brigid test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Mariella's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Brigid climbed just as high around 1965, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Brigid's path sketches the road Mariella is walking now.

The trade-off
- Every piece of it is already familiar in English — Maria, Ella, Gabriella — so it reads correctly on a first attempt more often than its length suggests.
- Several ready-made short forms, all of which stand alone as names: Ella, Mari, Mia, Ria.
- Works without adjustment in Italian, Spanish, German and French-speaking settings, with only a small spelling shift in Spanish.
- A documented line running back through Latin and Greek to Hebrew, unbroken for two thousand years.
- Uncommon enough in American classrooms that a child is unlikely to share it, while never sounding invented.
- Mariela, Marcella and Marbella are all near neighbors, and Mariella will be misheard or mis-typed as one of them fairly often. Spelling it out is a lifelong small habit.
- Ella is by far the easiest short form to reach for, and it is a very common name in its own right — a Mariella may find herself going by it more than she planned.
- The name is currently gaining ground rather than holding steady, so it is likely to feel more familiar in a decade than it does now.
- Four syllables with an emphatic ending pair awkwardly with some long surnames; worth saying the full name aloud a few times before deciding.
