Where it comes from

The story of Manual

The hand words are worth a paragraph because one of them has turned inside out. Manufacture was coined in the sixteenth century for things made by hand as opposed to by nature; within two hundred years it meant the opposite, because the factory arrived and took the word with it. Manuscript still means written by hand and is used chiefly of things that are typed. A manual is a book you hold; to manipulate is to handle; to emancipate is to take a hand off somebody. The Latin word for a hand is one of the most productive roots English owns, and almost none of its descendants mention hands any more.

Meaning

God is with us

The name is a Hebrew phrase, worn down through Greek and Spanish, and it has nothing to do with hands. This spelling collides with an English adjective by accident: the vowels in the last syllable are unstressed and interchangeable in speech, so a family writing Manuel by ear produced a word that was already in the dictionary. The record carries both, and only the spelling distinguishes them.

How the name formed

  2. Greek and Spanish wear it down to Manuel
  3. American families write it by ear

Manual sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1928, with 23 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Manual sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
