Manuel Komnenos ruled Byzantium for nearly forty years in the twelfth century and spent most of them trying to put the Roman empire back together — campaigning in Italy, Hungary, Serbia and Anatolia, marrying western princesses, jousting in tournaments in the Latin style, and being regarded by his own court as dangerously fond of foreigners. He very nearly managed it. The defeat that ended the attempt came late in his reign, and the empire never had the resources to try again. The name he made fashionable outlasted the project by a considerable margin.
