Manly
Masculine · “the English word manly”
Manly is an English word worn as a name, and it comes with two good stories. A Sydney beach suburb carries it because the first governor of New South Wales admired the Aboriginal men he met on its shore, and an American writer carried it into Appalachian fantasy: Manly Wade Wellman, author of the Silver John tales.

The story of Manly
In 1788, in the first months of the colony, Governor Arthur Phillip explored Sydney's harbor and met Aboriginal men on the north shore; he named the place Manly Cove for what he called their confidence and manly behavior, and the suburb and its famous beach still carry the word. In America, Manly served as a first name through the nineteenth century. Its best-known bearer is Manly Wade Wellman, a writer who made his home in North Carolina and set his stories of John the Balladeer, a wandering singer with a silver-strung guitar, among the folk magic of the southern mountains. The fantasy world gave him its award for life achievement.

Fashion outlook
Manly sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Spelled like a familiar English word, so it is read correctly on sight.
- Carried by a well-regarded American writer, Manly Wade Wellman, whose Silver John stories earned him a lifetime award in fantasy.
- Two syllables with an easy, familiar sound.
- It is an adjective with a strong meaning, so it will be heard as a description first and a name second, and the jokes are predictable.
- Manley, with an e, is the more common spelling of the surname, so expect it on forms.
