The obvious reading of this name is a folk etymology. Manley has nothing to do with being manly; it is an English place name, and the first element means common or shared, as in land held by the whole village rather than by one owner. The resemblance to the adjective is an accident that has been doing the name's public relations for a century.

How old is the name Manley?

Manley was already in use when US birth records began in 1880 — it is at least 145 years old. The typical Manley alive today was born around 1931, making them about 94 years old. About 700 people named Manley are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Manley most popular?

Manley peaked in 1897, reaching #515 nationally. See the whole 1897 chart.

Where it comes from

The story of Manley

The most interesting man to carry it carried it in the middle. Gerard Manley Hopkins was a Jesuit priest who wrote poetry he mostly did not publish, and who invented both a meter and a vocabulary to describe what he was doing. He called the meter sprung rhythm, counting stresses rather than syllables so that a line could hold any number of light beats around its heavy ones, which made his verse sound like nothing else in the language. He also coined two words for the ideas underneath it: inscape, the particular inner shape that makes a thing itself, and instress, the force that holds it together and the shock of recognizing it. Neither word caught on outside his own criticism. Both are still the only words for what he meant.

Meaning

the common wood

Old English, from a word meaning held in common joined to the ordinary element for a clearing or wood. Several English places carry it, which is why the surname is scattered rather than descending from a single family.

Manley sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1927, with 67 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Manley sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It belongs to the surname-name tradition without being one of the common examples.
  • The spelling and the sound agree completely and neither needs repeating.
  • It has a genuine English place behind it rather than an invented meaning.
What to consider
  • It is heard as the adjective first, always, whatever the etymology says.
  • The generation that used it in America is now very old.
  • Neither short form is much use, so the full name does all the work.
