Malakhi
Masculine · Hebrew roots · “my messenger”
The last book of the Hebrew prophets is a single word: Malakhi, "my messenger" — a title that became a name and has been read aloud in synagogues and churches ever since. This spelling keeps the Hebrew consonants intact, with the kh that transliterators use for the letter kaf. In the mouth it moves in three easy beats and lands on a long open sound, MAL-uh-kye.

The story of Malakhi
The name comes from Hebrew, where it stands as the title and closing word of the last book of the Twelve Prophets. The Greek translators of the Hebrew Bible rendered it Malachias, and Latin carried that form into Europe; English Bibles settled on Malachi, which is how most English speakers first met it. In Ireland a separate road converged on the same sound, with Malachy used to render older Gaelic names — Saint Malachy, archbishop of Armagh in the twelfth century, is the best known bearer. Malakhi is the modern spelling that goes back past all of that to the Hebrew consonants, and it is a recent arrival on American records.
Meaning
my messenger, or my angel
Hebrew mal'akh means both "messenger" and "angel"; the final -i is the possessive "my." Scholars have long debated whether the biblical book's closing word was a personal name or a description of the prophet, but the sense of the word itself is not in doubt.

Pronouncing Malakhi
MAL-uh-kye
Stress on the first syllable, and the ending rhymes with "sky." The kh is simply a k here, though the spelling will prompt some readers to try a throatier sound, and others to guess MAL-uh-kee.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Hansel test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Malakhi's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Hansel climbed just as high around 1905, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Hansel's path sketches the road Malakhi is walking now.
Malakhi sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is documented and easy to say in three words: "my messenger."
- The kh spelling follows the standard way Hebrew kaf is transliterated, so it is a principled choice rather than an invented one.
- Nearly everyone already knows the name in its Malachi spelling, so it is recognized on sight and rarely needs explaining.
- Short forms Mal and Kai are both in real use, and Kai functions as a full name elsewhere.
- Established forms exist in Hebrew, Irish, Spanish, French and Italian for family across languages.
- Malachi is by far the more familiar spelling in English, so Malakhi will be corrected and re-typed often. Most bearers of a variant spelling learn to spell it out early and think little of it after that.
- The kh invites a second guess at pronunciation — some will reach for a throatier sound, some will say MAL-uh-kee. One clear correction usually settles it.
- The wave for this spelling is very recent, so the great majority of people carrying it are still children. There is no generation of adult Malakhis for a child to be measured against — which cuts both ways.
