The story of Maizy
Margaret was one of the great medieval names, and Scots made Mairead and its diminutive Maisie. Henry James's What Maisie Knew of 1897 fixed the short form in English literature. The -zy respelling is recent, and Maizy appears in the American registers in the 2010s in current use.
Meaning
pearl
Through Maisie and the Scots Mairead, a form of Margaret, from the Greek margarites, 'pearl'. The Greek is itself a borrowing, probably from Old Persian and ultimately perhaps Sanskrit. The English maize, the grain, is a separate word from Taino and is not the source.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Maizy went to 103 girls in 2025, but Maisy, Mayci and Mayzi are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 528, which makes it the 502nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,394 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 3,044 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 15,605 for Maizy itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
