Lysette can be read two ways, and both are ordinary French. It may be a diminutive built on Elizabeth, which French makes freely, or it may be built on the word for a lily, which is the flower on the old royal arms and probably is not a lily at all.

Where it comes from

Our story of Lysette

The stylized flower on the arms of the French kings is called a fleur-de-lis, a lily flower, and botanists have been pointing out for a very long time that it looks far more like an iris. The three upright petals and the swept-back sepals are an iris; a lily does not grow that way. The usual explanation involves a yellow flag iris growing in a river associated with an early Frankish king, and the name attaching to the wrong plant afterward. Whatever the truth, the flower became the most reproduced emblem in European heraldry, went on the arms of English kings who claimed France, and is still on the flag of Quebec and the city of Florence. It is a lily by decree and an iris by inspection.

Meaningnot established

Not established

French produces short forms of Elizabeth in quantity, and Lise and Lisette are among them; this spelling could belong to that set. It could equally be built on lys, the lily. The record does not choose and both are plausible.

Lysette sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1996, with 34 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Lysette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The stress is unmistakable, so it is rarely mispronounced on a first reading.
  • Lys works as a short form and is unusual without being difficult.
  • It sits in a well-established French tradition of diminutives, so it is unfamiliar without being invented.
What to consider
  • Lisette and Lizette are both commoner, so the spelling will be checked back with you.
  • The y invites readers to try a long i, which changes the name entirely.
  • Two candidate origins give two different answers to the meaning question.
