Lyndsi
Feminine · “the island of Lincoln”
Lyndsi is a place name at two removes. Lindsey is a district of Lincolnshire, and its name means the island of Lincoln — an island because the land there was surrounded by marsh and river, and Lincoln because the Romans put a colony beside a pool. Two Latin words and a piece of drainage history, sitting inside a modern American girls' name.

The story of Lyndsi
Lindsey was a kingdom before it was a district. In the century after the Romans left it was one of the small Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of the north, squeezed between Northumbria and Mercia and eventually absorbed by both in turn, and it is the only one whose king list survives without a kingdom to go with it. The land was genuinely half water: the Trent and the Humber on two sides, marsh on the third, and a ridge of dry ground running down the middle. Everything about the name is a description of that geography, and none of it is visible now.
Meaning
the island of Lincoln
Lincoln is the Roman name Lindum Colonia worn down by fifteen centuries of English: Lindum is a British word for a pool, and colonia is what the Romans called a settlement for retired soldiers. Add the Old English word for an island and you have Lindsey, the northern part of Lincolnshire, which was very nearly an island before the fens were drained. The surname came from the place, the first name came from the surname, and the American spellings came from the sound.
How the name formed
- Roman Lindum Colonia, the colony at the pool
- Old English adds its word for an island
- Lindsey becomes a small Anglo-Saxon kingdom
- the place name becomes a surname and then a first name
- Lyndsi appears among the American spellings in the 1970s
