Our story of Lyndia
The modes were named after peoples and given the temperaments those peoples were supposed to have. The Dorian was firm and manly, the Phrygian excitable, the Lydian soft, relaxed and slightly disreputable, and the argument about which to permit in the education of the young is conducted at length in one of the founding works of Western political philosophy. Medieval church musicians inherited the names, attached them to different scales than the Greeks had meant, and passed the confusion on to modern theory, where a Lydian scale is a specific thing with no connection to any of it. The name survives three complete changes of meaning.

The name has two possible parents and they are unrelated. Lydia is a region of Asia Minor and a New Testament name; Linda is Germanic and separately a Spanish word. This spelling sits between them, and nothing in the record decides which one a family had in mind.

Fashion outlook
Lyndia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Lyn is available as a short form and stands alone as a name.
- Every sound in it is ordinary English and it is easy to say from the page.
- It is genuinely rare while sounding entirely familiar.
- Lydia and Linda are both far commoner and both will be substituted.
- The two possible parents give two different meanings and nothing chooses.
- It is dated to the middle of the twentieth century in American use.
