Lyndell has lime trees in it. The English place name Lindale, and its variants, come from the Norse word for the lime or linden tree and the word for a valley — a real feature of the northern landscape, since lindens grew thickly in the dales. As a first name it also fits the American -dell pattern exactly, which is why it sounds at once English and mid-century American.

The story of Lyndell
The linden is one of the trees Norse settlers named places for, and the -dale endings across the north of England mark where they farmed. Lindale, Lyndal and Lyndale all survive as place names and as surnames. In twentieth-century America the sound was reinforced from an entirely different direction: Lynn became a widely used name for both sexes, and -dell was a productive ending, so Lyndell could be assembled from parts without anyone knowing anything about the Lake District. The result is a name with an English pedigree and an American accent.
Meaningscholars disagree
the valley of the lime trees
Read as a form of Lindale or Lyndal, the meaning is the Norse lind, a lime or linden tree, with dalr, a valley. Read as an American construction, it is Lynn joined to the ending -dell, and Lynn is itself a Welsh word for a lake or pool. Both readings are respectable, and the name has arrived by both routes.

Fashion outlook
Lyndell sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It has two short forms with entirely different characters, which gives a child real range.
- Both possible origins are documented and neither is invented.
- Nothing in the spelling causes an English reader to hesitate.
- Lyndal, Lindell, Lyndel and Lindale all compete, so the spelling is a permanent footnote.
- The Lynn inside it reads as a woman's name to most Americans, and nearly every child given this spelling is a boy.
- It carries a mid-century flavor that some ears hear as warm and others as dated.
