Where it comes from

Our story of Lutie

The Roman settlement on the island in the Seine was called Lutetia, and one long-standing derivation reads it as connected to a word for mud or marsh, which suits the site: an island in a river with wetland on both banks. Other derivations have been proposed and none has settled it. The city dropped the name in favor of the tribe that lived there, the Parisii, which is the usual late Roman pattern; a good many French cities are named after peoples rather than places for exactly that reason. Lutetia survives in scientific Latin, in the name of an element, and in a hotel.

Lucy, Luella and Lutitia have all been suggested and none is documented. The record holds the short form on its own, which is usual for names of its period.

Lutie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1891, with 30 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Lutie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Five letters and two syllables: quick to write and easy to remember.
  • It is genuinely rare without containing a difficult sound.
  • It has a documented place in the earlier American record.
What to consider
  • It reads as a name of a much older generation, which is either the appeal or the obstacle.
  • It will be heard as Lucy or Judy by people catching it once.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing settled to answer with.
