Luellen
Feminine · “probably Lou joined to Ellen”
Luellen is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 690 girls against 5 boys since 1880.
Luellen can be read as an American welding of two short names or as a respelling of a Welsh prince's name, and the record holds it for sons as well as daughters. The Welsh reading comes with one of the best-documented invented traditions in Britain.

The story of Luellen
The village of Beddgelert in Snowdonia is named, the story goes, after the grave of a dog. Prince Llywelyn returns from hunting, finds his infant son's cradle overturned and his hound covered in blood, kills the dog on the spot, and then hears the child cry and finds a dead wolf behind the cradle. There is a grave in a field with an inscribed stone, and visitors have wept over it for two centuries. It was made up. A local innkeeper called David Pritchard, who arrived in the late seventeen-nineties and wanted the coaching trade, attached a wandering folk tale — the same story exists across Europe and Asia and is very old — to the village name and arranged the stones himself. The village's name almost certainly refers to a saint. The grave is still there, and so is the trade.
Meaningscholars disagree
probably Lou joined to Ellen, or a respelling of a Welsh name
The welded reading joins two familiar forms and means nothing beyond them. The Welsh name behind the other reading joins elements usually read as leader and likeness, and is the name of two medieval princes. Neither can be shown for a given family.
Pronouncing Luellen
loo-ELL-un
Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The Welsh name it may respell begins with a sound English does not have at all, so the two versions are not interchangeable in speech.

Fashion outlook
Luellen sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Both halves detach as short forms and each is a standing name.
- Middle stress on three syllables is the easiest rhythm English offers.
- It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
- Luellen, Luellyn and Lewellen are all recorded and the spelling will need giving.
- The Welsh reading involves a sound English speakers cannot produce.
- Which of the two possible origins applies is not recorded.
