Lossie
Feminine
Lossie is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 1,189 girls against 24 boys since 1880.
There is a river called the Lossie in the north-east of Scotland, and a fishing town at its mouth that gave Britain a prime minister. The American name is not from either; it is a southern pet form, made at home, and the coincidence of spelling is worth pointing out so that it is not mistaken for a source.
How old is the name Lossie?

Our story of Lossie
Lossiemouth is a small town built on herring and later on an air base, and the boy born there to an unmarried farm servant in the eighteen-sixties became the first Labour prime minister of the United Kingdom. He was educated at the local school, worked as a pupil teacher, went south with no money, and spent decades building a party out of nothing before leading it into government twice; he then split it and was expelled from it, and his name has been argued over ever since. The town has a museum. None of this has anything to do with the American girls named Lossie in the same decades, who came from a different country and a different naming tradition, and the resemblance is exactly as meaningful as it looks, which is not at all.

Not established
No source can be established for the American name. It appears in southern records in the nineteenth century alongside a great many similar short forms, and no family wrote down what it came from; Lois, Lucy and Louisa are all possible parents and none is documented. The Scottish river name is unrelated and its own meaning is not securely known.
Pronouncing Lossie
LOSS-ee
Two syllables with the stress at the front. The doubled s keeps it unvoiced, which matters: a single s between vowels would be read as a z and produce a different name entirely.

Fashion outlook
Lossie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Short, warm and easy for a small child to say and eventually to write.
- It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
- It is genuinely uncommon while containing no unfamiliar sound.
- The record carries it for boys as well as girls, so it signals nothing on a form.
- The first syllable is an English word about losing, which children will find.
- There is no meaning and no recoverable full name to fall back on.
Nobody names a baby alone.
