Where it comes from

The story of Lorrayne

When Charlemagne's empire was divided among his grandsons, the middle share was a long north-south corridor with no natural borders, running from the North Sea to Italy, and it fell apart within two generations while the east and west shares became Germany and France. What remained of the middle kept the name of the king who had held it. The corridor has been the ground of European wars ever since, for the straightforward reason that it was never a country — it was an accounting solution to the problem of having three heirs, and everything that happened there afterward followed from that.

Meaning

The kingdom of Lothair

The Latin name means the realm of Lothair, a Carolingian king whose middle portion of the empire was neither France nor Germany. The French name of the region wore down from that phrase, and the given name comes from the region.

Fashion outlook

Lorrayne sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The place behind it is real, large and historically central.
  • The back stress gives it a strong finish.
  • It shortens to a name that is entirely current.
What to consider
  • Lorraine is the standard spelling and hers will be written that way.
  • The altered letters are inaudible, so she will spell it rather than say it.
  • The name sits firmly in one American generation.
