The story of Loretto
The best-known thing named Loretto in America is a staircase. A community of nuns built a chapel in Santa Fe and discovered, when it was finished, that there was no way up to the choir loft — the space was too narrow for an ordinary stair. What was eventually built is a helix of two full turns with no central column and, as first constructed, no visible support at the sides, assembled from wood joined with pegs rather than nails. The order's own account credits a carpenter who appeared, worked alone, and left without being paid or named, which is a good story and has never been documented. Carpenters and historians have since offered candidates and explanations, and the stair still stands, which is the part nobody disputes.
Meaning
From Loreto, the Italian town
The name is a place name and carries no other sense. The doubled t is the form the American religious orders used, and it is how the name appears on their schools, their chapels and their students' certificates; Italian writes the town with one.

Fashion outlook
Loretto sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is a place name with a specific, documented history rather than a vague one.
- The ending gives it an unusual shape for a woman's name in English, which makes it memorable.
- It shortens to forms that sound entirely ordinary.
- The final o reads as masculine to Spanish and Italian speakers, and the spelling is in fact recorded for both sexes here, with most of it going to boys.
- Loretta is far more familiar in America and hers will be corrected to it.
- The name carries a religious association that is not optional.
