The Frankish name that became Louis was long and heavily consonanted, and French wore it down over centuries until almost nothing of the original was left to hear. It then went everywhere, because French kings kept using it. One consequence is worth knowing: from the seventeenth century until the Revolution, a louis was money. The louis d'or was France's gold coin, named after the king whose face was on it, and it stayed in circulation and in the language long enough that characters in novels still count in louis when the coin itself has been gone for decades. Few names have been legal tender. This one was.
