Where it comes from

The story of Lizmarie

Elizabeth and Mary meet in the first chapter of Luke's Gospel. Mary, just told she will bear a child, goes into the hill country to visit her relative Elizabeth, pregnant after long years without children, and Elizabeth greets her with the words blessed are you among women; Mary answers with the song known as the Magnificat. Christian art has painted the scene for centuries as the Visitation. Lizmarie joins the two names in one breath, either from Liz and Marie or from Lisa Marie with the spelling tightened, and the record does not say which.

Meaning

Elizabeth and Mary joined

Fashion outlook

Lizmarie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves are among the best-known women's names in the Christian world.
  • Liz gives an obvious everyday short form.
  • The pairing has a scriptural scene behind it, the meeting of Elizabeth and Mary.
What to consider
  • As one word it will be split or hyphenated on forms, and people will ask whether it is Liz Marie, Lizmarie or Lisa Marie.
  • The stress can fall on the first syllable or the last; settling it at home saves correcting it at school.
