Lizett
Feminine · “My God is an oath”
Lizett drops the final e and the doubled t is then left with nothing to do. In the French spelling the two letters work together, the doubling keeping the vowel short and the e keeping the t from closing the word; take the e away and English simply reads a hard ending, and one of the two letters is redundant.

Our story of Lizett
The French ending is one of the most productive things English ever borrowed and it came without any of its rules. In French it is a genuine diminutive, applied to nouns as well as names and meaning small or dear; in English it arrived first on objects, in words like cigarette and kitchenette, and only later on names, where it was used as a marker of femininity rather than of size. The doubled consonant before it belongs to French orthography and does the same job English doubling does, protecting a short vowel. Removing the final e leaves that doubling stranded, since English does not need two letters to close a syllable that a single one would close. The spelling is therefore one letter longer than it needs to be and one letter shorter than the French.

My God is an oath
A French diminutive of Elisabeth by way of Lise, so the meaning belongs to the Hebrew original: a sentence joining the word for God to one that means both an oath and the number seven. The diminutive adds affection. Nothing in the American respelling contributes anything.

li-ZET
Two syllables with the stress at the back, which the French ending brings with it. The z writes the sound an s would have here anyway, since English voices an s between vowels.

Fashion outlook
Lizett sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Final stress gives the name a clean, definite finish.
- Liz is a complete, established short form available immediately.
- It is at home in Spanish as well as English, where the same spelling is used.
- Lisette is the French spelling and Lizette the commoner American one, so this is a third option.
- The doubled t without the final e is a hybrid that belongs to no language.
- It will be read as a shortening of Elizabeth whatever is on the certificate.
