Where it comes from

Our story of Linna

Finnish builds its place names out of ordinary nouns and is unembarrassed about it. Hämeenlinna is the castle of Häme; Savonlinna is the castle of Savo; Olavinlinna is Olav's castle. The word for the fortification is simply attached to the word for the region, and the result is a city name that any speaker can take apart. English used to work that way too — a great many English towns are a personal name plus a word for a farm or a ford — but the words have worn down so far that nobody hears them any more. A Finnish place name is what an English one looked like before eight hundred years of erosion.

Meaningnot established

Not established

In Finnish the word means a castle or a fortress and closes a great many place names. As a personal name it is also the back half of Carolina, Paulina and half a dozen others, cut loose. The American record of the period holds all of these and distinguishes none.

Linna sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1950, with 20 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Linna sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, soft and easy for a child at any age.
  • The spelling is unambiguous.
  • It is rare while sounding entirely familiar.
What to consider
  • Lena, Lina and Lynna are all nearby and hers will be written as one of them.
  • The spelling is recorded for both sexes, though it belongs overwhelmingly to the girls.
  • Three possible origins mean no meaning can be claimed outright.
