Lincolnshire was divided into three parts and one of them was called Holland, with no connection to the Netherlands whatever. The name is English, describing low-lying land, and the district kept it as a formal administrative division until local government was reorganised in the nineteen-seventies. The other two parts were this name and Kesteven, and all three were genuine units of government with their own councils, not antiquarian survivals. It is one of the more disorienting facts about the English map: a county with a Holland in it, next to a Boston, both of them older than the more famous places they now seem to be named after.
