Our story of Ligia
A Polish writer published a novel about Nero's Rome in the eighteen-nineties, serialised in three newspapers at once, and it became one of the best-selling books of the century in every language it was translated into. Its heroine is the daughter of a barbarian king, held in Rome as a hostage, and her name is essentially her nationality. The book was read as being about Poland, which did not exist as a state at the time and whose language was being suppressed in the part of it under Russian rule; a story about a people surviving an empire had an obvious second meaning to Polish readers and to a good many others. Its author was given the Nobel Prize in literature a few years later. The name entered use in Poland, in Brazil and across Latin America, and reached American records with immigrant families.
Meaningnot established
Not established
In the novel the name is not a word: it identifies the character as a hostage from the Lygian people, a tribe the Romans recorded on the Vistula. A separate Greek name meaning clear-voiced or shrill exists and is sometimes offered as the source, but the two are unrelated and the novel is much the likelier route.

Fashion outlook
Ligia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, distinctive and spelled exactly as it is said in several languages.
- The literary source is genuinely documented, which very few names can claim.
- It travels between Polish, Spanish and Portuguese without alteration.
- Lygia, Lidia and Lygia are all recorded and will be confused with it.
- The g has different values in the languages the name is used in.
- It is a character's name rather than a word, so the meaning question has an unusual answer.
