Where it comes from

The story of Liddie

Coins were invented in Lydia in the seventh century before Christ, out of electrum, a natural alloy of gold and silver panned from a river that ran through the capital. Before that, value was weighed out and tested at every transaction; a stamped coin is a promise by an authority that a lump of metal is what it says it is, and it made everyday trade possible in a way nothing before it had. The last Lydian king was Croesus, whose wealth was famous enough in the ancient world to become a comparison and is still one in English: to be as rich as Croesus is to be at the far end of the scale. He lost his kingdom to Persia, and the name of the country went on into Greek, into the New Testament, and into English as a woman's name.

Meaning

Woman of Lydia

The name is an ethnic label rather than a description, of the same kind as Lucia, from Lucania, or Sabina, from the Sabines. It says where a woman came from, or where her family said they came from, and nothing about her. What the Lydians called themselves is a separate question with a separate answer, and the Greek name for them is the one the name preserves.

LID-ee

Two syllables with the stress at the front and a short first vowel, which is the difference from the full name: Lydia begins long and this does not. The doubled d is what shortens it, and it is doing real work.

Fashion outlook

Liddie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, warm and easy for a small child to say and eventually to write.
  • The name behind it is completely established and available as a formal version.
  • It has a real history attached that a child can look up and verify.
What to consider
  • It is a pet form on a certificate, which leaves nothing more formal underneath unless Lydia is written there too.
  • Liddie, Lyddie and Liddy are all in use for the same sound.
  • The name is strongly dated to the nineteenth century in American records.
