Where it comes from

Our story of Licia

Lycia was a confederation of cities with its own language, written in an alphabet adapted from Greek, carved on rock tombs cut into cliffs that are still standing. The script could be read phonetically almost at once, because the letters were familiar, but the language could not be understood, and it took until the twentieth century to establish that it belonged to the Anatolian family and was a relative of Hittite. Bilingual inscriptions did most of the work. The tombs themselves are extraordinary: house-shaped facades cut into vertical rock, with the doorways forty feet off the ground, and nobody is entirely sure how the builders reached them.

Fashion outlook

Licia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short on paper and quick to write.
  • It is soft throughout with nothing difficult in it.
  • It works in English and Italian households alike.
What to consider
  • Two readings are in circulation and the spelling settles neither.
  • Alicia and Felicia are both far commoner, so the name will be heard as a short form of one.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing to answer with.
