Where it comes from

Our story of Lexia

Greek lexis is a word, and it gives English lexicon, lexical and a set of medical terms. In the eighteen-eighties a German physician described patients who could see perfectly well and could not read, and called the condition word blindness; a colleague coined the Greek version, dyslexia, shortly afterward. The same root supplies alexia, which is the loss of reading ability after a stroke or injury, as distinct from never having acquired it. A great deal of what is known about how reading works in the brain came out of studying people who had lost the ability, which is the usual route: the machinery is invisible until it breaks. Lexia is not named for any of that, but the syllable has been doing serious work for a century.

Alexia is the usual suggestion and the shape supports it. Nothing in the record documents the connection, and names of this length are frequently assembled rather than cut down.

Fashion outlook

Lexia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Lex and Lexi are both ready as short forms and both are widely used.
  • It is read correctly at first sight by nearly everybody.
  • It is short on paper while sounding like a full name.
What to consider
  • Alexia and Lexi are both commoner, so the name will be heard as a short form of something else.
  • The syllable is attached to a reading difficulty in medical vocabulary, which a curious child will eventually find.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing settled to answer with.
