Where it comes from

The story of Letisia

The spelling is the interesting part, and the reason is a sound change that reshaped half the Spanish-speaking world. In most of Spain, the c of Leticia is said with the th of think, a sound distinct from s. Across Latin America and in southern Spain the two merged — a change called seseo — so that c, s and z in these positions all say the same thing. Once they do, spelling becomes a free choice, and the same name can be written Leticia, Letisia or Letizia by three people who pronounce it identically. The name has one small piece of geopolitics attached: a town called Leticia, on the Amazon at the corner where Colombia, Peru and Brazil meet, gave its name to a short and bitter war between the first two, fought in the river and the jungle over a port.

Meaning

Gladness

The Latin word is laetitia, and it means gladness or joy — the state, not the feeling of a moment. Romans used it as a personification on coins, where Laetitia stood for public rejoicing. The name has kept that sense unchanged through Spanish, French and English, whatever letters it has been spelled with.

Fashion outlook

Letisia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled, ancient and unambiguously good.
  • It works in Spanish and English with no change beyond the pace of the ending.
  • It offers short forms in both languages that sound nothing alike, which gives her room.
What to consider
  • Three spellings compete and hers is the least common of them, so it will be corrected often.
  • English speakers stumble over the middle of the name until they hear it once.
  • The name is read as distinctly Spanish in most of the country, which may or may not be what a family wants.
