Where it comes from

Our story of Lesta

Lest is three Old English words welded together. The phrase was þy læs þe — by the less that — and it wore down through Middle English into a single conjunction meaning for fear that. It is one of the last words in English that reliably takes the subjunctive: lest he be late, not lest he is late, which is why it turns up so often in formal writing and so rarely in speech. Most speakers now meet it only in fixed phrases — lest we forget, lest there be any doubt — and would not produce it spontaneously. Its cousin unless was built the same way, from on lesse that, and survived because it does ordinary work. Lest kept the grammar and lost the usage, which is a common fate for a word that sounds slightly grand.

Lesta sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1938, with 19 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Lesta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Five letters with no silent ones make it quick to write and simple to spell aloud.
  • Two syllables with front stress is the plainest shape English has.
  • It is genuinely rare and belongs to almost nobody now living.
What to consider
  • Leta, Lester and Lesha will all be written for it.
  • It reads as a feminine of a men's name, which some families intend and others do not.
  • Nothing records its origin, so the meaning question has no honest answer.
