Where it comes from

The story of Lessly

The Leslies take their name from lands in Aberdeenshire, and family tradition traces them to Bartolf, a Hungarian who is said to have come to Scotland with Queen Margaret in the eleventh century. Crossing a flooded river with the queen riding behind him, he told her to hold on to his belt — 'Grip fast!' — and the words became the clan motto. A later rhyme explains the name itself, 'between the less lee and the mair' (the lesser meadow and the greater), but it is a story fitted to the sound, not an etymology. Leslie became a girl's name in America in the twentieth century, and Lessly is a spelling by ear, most common in Spanish-speaking families.

Fashion outlook

Lessly sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
