Leonia
Feminine · “lion”
Leonia is a Latin feminine of Leo, and Leo is simply the animal. Europeans have been naming children after lions for two thousand years in countries where a lion had not been seen in the wild since prehistory. The animal reached them through the Bible, through Roman spectacle and through heraldry, and none of those required anybody to have met one.

The story of Leonia
There were lions in Europe once, in Greece and the Balkans, and classical writers describe them as a living memory rather than a legend. By the Roman imperial period they were gone from the continent and had to be shipped in from North Africa and the Near East for the arena, in numbers that helped finish them off there too. After that, Europe's lions were entirely secondhand: in scripture, where they appear constantly; in the arena, as a memory; and above all in heraldry, where the lion became the standard beast of aggressive display and turns up on more coats of arms than any other animal. A continent with no lions produced a thousand years of lion imagery and a long list of lion names, of which this is one.
Meaning
lion
The Latin word for the animal, used as a personal name from the Roman period onwards, with a Latin feminine ending added. The reading is not in dispute. What is worth adding is that the -onia ending gives the name a shape that English associates with places rather than people, which is why it can read as a country or a town at first glance.

Fashion outlook
Leonia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The meaning is concrete, memorable and about as easy to explain as a meaning gets.
- Leo is available inside it and is currently one of the most fashionable short names anywhere.
- It is a genuine Latin name with an unbroken record rather than a modern elaboration.
- The -onia ending reads as a place name, and people will hear a country before they hear a person.
- Four syllables will be reduced to two by everybody outside the family.
- It will be confused with Leona, Leonie and Livonia in writing.
