Where it comes from

Our story of Lekesha

Ketchup was a fish sauce. The word appears to come from a Hokkien term for a fermented fish brine, picked up by English traders in Southeast Asia in the seventeenth century, and the earliest English recipes are for exactly that: anchovies, salt and spices, left to ferment and strained. Then cooks began making the same thing with whatever was to hand. Mushroom ketchup was the standard kind for well over a century and is still made; there were walnut, oyster, cucumber and lemon versions. Tomato ketchup is a nineteenth-century American arrival, and the sweet, thick, vinegar-heavy version everyone now means dates from the eighteen-seventies, when sugar and vinegar replaced the fermentation that had preserved it. The word traveled from a Chinese dialect to a Malay port to an English kitchen to an American bottle.

Fashion outlook

Lekesha sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Middle stress on three syllables is the easiest rhythm English offers.
  • Kesha detaches cleanly and is a complete name.
  • The spelling is phonetic and can be written from hearing.
What to consider
  • Lakeisha, Lakesha and Lekeisha are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The spelling has to be given aloud every time, without exception.
  • No meaning can honestly be given for either element.
