Where it comes from

Our story of Lecia

The camera with almost the same name is worth mentioning because it is put together the same way. Leica is a portmanteau of the founder's surname, Leitz, and the word camera, coined in the nineteen-twenties for a small machine that used cinema film in a still body and changed photography by making it possible to work quickly and unobtrusively; the news photograph as a form is largely downstream of it. The name was manufactured from two pieces in the ordinary commercial manner, and it is a coincidence that it lands on a woman's name assembled from a different two pieces at about the same time. Both are twentieth-century constructions and neither has an etymology in the old sense.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source can be established. The candidates have completely different meanings, from noble kind to happiness to light, and choosing one would mean guessing. A shortening that removes the beginning of a name removes exactly the part that identifies it, which is why front-clippings are so much harder to trace than back-clippings.

Pronouncing Lecia

LEE-shuh

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The ci before a final vowel produces a sh sound, which is the standard English treatment of that spelling and the reason a great many names ending this way are said as they are.

Lecia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1961, with 93 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Lecia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, soft and easy to say, with nothing silent or ambiguous in it.
  • Lee is a complete, current short form sitting in the front half.
  • It is genuinely uncommon while containing no unfamiliar sound.
What to consider
  • Lecia, Lesha and Leisha all exist for the same sound.
  • The full name behind it cannot be recovered, so there is no meaning to give.
  • It is strongly dated to the middle of the last century in American records.
