Poe used the name twice, in a poem called Lenore and then in The Raven, where the narrator sits up at night with a bird that will not leave and says one word, thinking about a woman the poem calls rare and radiant and repeatedly describes as lost. The Raven was an immediate popular success, was reprinted everywhere, and became one of the most memorized poems in American schools. The name went with it. For a long stretch afterward Lenore in English carried a specific flavor of elegy that it had never had before and has never entirely lost, which is a great deal of freight for one poem to load onto three syllables.
