Leanna
Feminine
Leanna is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 25,932 girls against 5 boys since 1880.
Leanna joins two of the most durable elements in English naming — the meadow-name Lee and the ancient Anna — into three easy syllables that rise in the middle and land softly. It has been on American records for well over a century without ever crowding a classroom, and it belongs to the same family as Liana in Italian and Liane in French.

The story of Leanna
Anna is one of the oldest continuously used names in Europe, carried from Hebrew Hannah into Greek and Latin and from there into nearly every Christian language. Lee arrived from the other direction: an English surname drawn from the word for a meadow, which crossed into given-name use in America in the nineteenth century and then attached itself to dozens of compounds. Leanne, Leanna and Lianna all grew out of that habit of pairing, and the -anna form has the added advantage of matching Liana, already long established in Italian and French. So the name sits at a junction, reachable from a very old root and from a very modern one.
Meaningscholars disagree
Most often read as "Lee" plus "Anna," the latter meaning "grace"
Two serious readings compete. The first treats Leanna as an English compound: Lee or Leigh, from the Old English word for a meadow or clearing, joined to Anna, which comes through Greek from Hebrew Hannah, "grace, favor." The second treats it as a spelling of Liana, which in Italian is a short form of longer names ending in -liana, such as Giuliana and Emiliana, and in French coincides with liane, a climbing vine. Both roads are respectable, and the name has been used with each in mind.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Leanna went to 300 girls in 2025, but Leana, Leeanna and Leeana and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 419, which makes it the 575th most-given girls’ name of the year — 315 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 3,836 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 5,358 for Leanna itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Marta test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Leanna's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Marta climbed just as high around 1950, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Marta's path sketches the road Leanna is walking now.
Leanna sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Every element is already familiar in English — Lee, Anna, Leanne — so people can usually spell it after one telling.
- Has appeared on US records for well over a century without a boom-and-crash cycle, so it reads as neither trendy nor dated.
- Travels easily: Liana in Italian, Liane in French, Lianna and Leana in English-speaking countries.
- Offers unusually different short forms from either end — Lea, Anna, Annie — without forcing any of them.
- Familiar to the ear while staying uncommon on class lists, in California, Texas and New York especially.
- The nearby spellings are the real cost: Leanne, Liana, Lianna, Leana and Leeanna all exist, and she will spend a lifetime saying which one she is.
- Two pronunciations circulate, lee-AN-uh and lee-AH-nuh, so expect to make the correction fairly often.
- Bearers today skew toward adults rather than young children, which some parents like and others read as a slightly grown-up name for a baby.
